Interview with Liu Xiangchen, writer, documentarist and professor of Anthopology at Xinjiang Normal University

1, Many people who have doubted Xinjiang actually have never been there. Most of them judge it by some abstract ideas or feelings, especially after hearing the reports from the media. Generally they would describe Xinjiang as a place that is very foreign to Xinjiang people.

2, Xinjiang is a place that could bring lots of ultimate sensations to people.

3, We need to think that a lot of those terroists are actually young people around their 20s. Why would they choose the desperate path? There might influence from the international context and external powers, and it also shows that there are gaps in our advocacy and education. Therefore there is space for external powers and extreme religious influences. People from different ethnities in Xinjiang are genearlly very lovely and honest. Why have they become a marginalized group? There are to many things for us to reflect.

4, Because of its unique geographic localtion, Xinjiang is able to connect different civilizations and different cultures. We could say that more than two thousand years ago, atala silk was waved around in Xinjiang and lead the whole world; the second characteristics of Xinjiang is that it has the world's largest vertical line.

5, Many of the worlds' conflicts and confrontations are gathered on this spot. To the whole world, Xinjiang is a good benchmark. Each civilization, and each kind of lifestyle could find its reference in Xinjiang.

by 徐贲 (Ben Xu), professor at the Department of English at St. Mary's College of California

1, Popular words are like jokes among the mass spread by word of mouth. They are popular because people use them, and because not only do they find them useful, but also joyful. If no one uses them, they will naturally disappear.

2, Many of the popular words on the Interet are very worrysome because it seems our society is going towards a “downward” trend. “Pretending to be a cunt” or “men's pubic hair” are just tips of the iceberg. This trend is not because people are intentionally against the beautiful and pure Chinese language. It is rather because of people's lack of respect, opposition towards and resentment among each other.

3, Another representation of “downward obscene language” is that a number of groups of people are nicknamed. For example, “men's pubic hair”, “five cents”, “stinky public intellectuals”, “brick (fake) experts (because special expertise sounds the name as brick)”, “named beast (sounds the name as professor)”, “traitors of the United States”, etc. These self-deprecating words are not only spread by some groups of people, but some mainstream media. It is as if they are not aware of the connotation of these twisted words, or they pretend not to know it.

There are a couple Wechat groups where people listen to others reading poetry, some by celebrities, some by ordinary people.

Modern poetries are also integrated into modern folk songs that enjoy a big following.
I listened to some songs, really not bad.
The Poem For You Wechat group invited Peng Liyuan to read Hans Christian Anderson's The Ugly Duckling together with the Danish Queen Margaret 2 when she came to visit China in 2014.

The independent think tank initiated by five liberal economics including Mao Yushi, Zhang Shugang, Fan Gang, etc.

He writes about how China had a history of asking the intellectual to criticize since Tang Dynasty but there has been changes since then.

1, Whether there is real criticism is a benchmark to determine the healthy development of a society. It is also a scale of reward or wrongdoing to see if a political leader could not oppress criticism, but rather reflect the criticism. In terms of a specific person, another important representation of criticism is that it is beneficial to those who are criticized; therefore if criticism is oppressed, not only it is not good for the society, it is going to bury the oppressor.

2, If there is no culture of criticism, it is not correct, not strong, or beautiful.

3, Therefore, the primary quality for a political figure is to acknowledge criticism and shoulder wrongdoings and responsibilities.

4, The attitude about criticism is also related to policital preference. The world's most beautiful flower does not exist. There are all different colors.

5, In terms of today's China, the world has no doubt on its economic achievement. What people have been expecting is how she is going to carry on its long-cherished cultural heritage – the spirit of criticism and the principal and freedom of expression, to create another political and cultural peak .
